40 years ago the Bulldog football team
commanded their cleats over each team in the conference, setting records and
securing possession of the national championship as the dust of the season settled.
The year was 1974 (for those of you
who don’t care for math) and the head coach was Jim Wacker. Wacker coached his
team through five defensive shutout games, according to Tim Clark’s stats.
This extreme defensive vigor led the
team to secure records in fewest points allowed in a season, fewest total yards
allowed per game, fewest total yards allowed in a single game, fewest rushing
yards allowed per game and fewest rushing yards allowed in a game. The 44
points the Bulldogs allowed that season is a record number yet to be broken.
The offensive part of that team was no
motley crew either; setting records for season rushing yardage, rushing yardage
in a game, total offense in a season and most points scored in a season, most
TD rushes in a season, and most total TDs scored in a season. The offense
paralleled the defense as the record for most points scored in a season remains
unbroken.
The team stood together and received
applause from coaches, family and friends. The team members thanked, God, their
family, and the school for their opportunities and memories. Dylan Stork, Reporter
