Contrary to every charcoal company ad
and cheesy late night sitcom, tailgating is an event for more than just
drunken, face-painted men trying to escape their reality. Our first TLU
tailgate proved that.
Before the Bulldog football team broke
onto the new field, a new tradition started on the campus. Student
organizations, families and even sports teams set up their own areas to create
fellowship, take a load off, laugh and even drink some beer.

A surge of alumni was expected for the
game, but this new founded gathering probably attracted more and gave them a
wonderful environment during their visit back at Texas Lutheran.
Cold beers were finished and hands
were shook. I met alumni from days passed and exchanged stories with fraternity
brothers who pledged in the 70’s. I walked around greeting members from each
organization, much like everyone else. A social gathering like this, a
gathering that attracts so many and promotes intermingling is not as existing
on campus as one might think.
The event gave alumni the opportunity
to come back to a welcoming school environment and the ability to mingle with
fellow alumni and students. It also provided students and faculty the chance to
take their relationships beyond the usual, one dimensional alliance.
The administration took a leap that I
can really respect. While our scholastic dimensions are extremely important,
stress free social gatherings like this are important as well. I hope that this
recently birthed ordeal continues on as long as TLU does. We look forward to
this Homecoming and Family weekend, and expect to see TLU packed once again
with our amazing alumni, parents, family, and friends. The tailgating tradition
at TLU is off to a great start, and we anticipate this weekend to raise the bar
even higher.
